Rigging Essentials

Paradise Rigging School’s structure is designed like an Avalanche School’s. With Avy 1 you learn the basics of backcountry travel and have enough knowledge to start venturing into the backcountry. Highline Rigging Essentials aims to be very similar, but for highlining. The goal of the course is for you to walk away with the knowledge to rig your own highline safely.
Highline Rigging Essentials is a 2.5 day long class taught by two of our instructors. It is packed full of information such as; building various anchors types, understanding all types of connections and the best ways to use them , inspect an existing rig, pass knots, and tons more.
You’ll show up Friday early afternoon and have a basic lecture/instructional in camp. Hands on learning all day Saturday. Sunday is the practical. You’ll break into small groups and attempt to safely rig a highline while instructors take note of your performance. You’ll receive a report card with a grade and areas the instructors think you need improvement on.

Q: Who is this class for?
A: So far we have found that people that are new to the highlining sport in the last 1-3 years with minimal rigging experience get the most out of the class. If you’re someone who has seen people rig, asked to help on little bits here and there but not really sure what the whole picture is or what a rig should look like, this class is for you.
You will leave this class more confident in all your rigging and with a solid foundation to learn more.

After you sing up you’ll receive a study guide from our school director Philip Queen outlining a bunch of information you should know before coming to the upcoming class.

Meet Our Instructors!

Ana Lincoln

She has been highlining for five years. She first joined the highline community in Boulder, Colorado in 2017, and has been part of numerous Colorado and US highline record projects. She has rigged for many festivals, including GGBY. The first piece of webbing she bought was 250m of Lift because she was stoked on big lines and segmenting didn’t exist yet. Now she’s an expert soft shackle maker, and is excited to teach a broad spectrum of rigging techniques.

Philip Queen

is one of the biggest rigging nerds you’ll meet. He has been highlining for five years and slacklining for ten. He is a member of the Safety Commission of the International Slackline Association, and is dedicated to rigging science and innovation. He has rigged for festivals and projects across the US, including GGBY, Smith Rock, and a US record project. He is an expert at analyzing rigs and communicating best practices.

Clayton Underwood

Clayton Underwood is a senior instructor for the International Slackline Association who helps facilitate Rigging Certifications in the US and Mexico. Born in Lander, WY, Clayton grew up on the Wind River Reservation until he was 10, then moved to Albuquerque, NM. With years of rigging experience and several certifications, Clayton works as a rigger in the New Mexico film industry and travels around the world to rig for slackline projects and gatherings. He's dedicated to making highlines safe, fun, and accessible for all.

ISA Prep Course

2.5 Day course that focuses on many advanced rigging techniques. Designed to help give you the best chance of passing an ISA certification course. The class is not a guarantee that you’ll pass the ISA test but we will give you the knowledge to be confident when you do decide to take the test. This will also include learning how to rescue someone from a highline. We aim to make this class a step up from our Rigging essentials class. For advanced highliners who already know basics of rigging and knot tying.

We also reach out to participants before the course to get a good idea of you knowledge level, and what you want to learn and work on. You can specifically ask for rigging styles and methods.
